What is Qigong?

What is Qigong? · Gentle Mindful Movement for Health & Calm

Qigong isn’t just exercise — it’s how you restore yourself from the inside out, supporting nervous system regulation, mindful movement, and emotional wellbeing.

It’s a system of gentle, breath-led movement that nourishes your body, calms your mind, and reconnects you with your own vitality.

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and developed over more than 5,000 years, qigong is a way of working with your energy — your Qi — to cultivate health from the inside out. It’s about flow, not force. Presence, not performance.

It’s accessible to every body, at every age — and it’s deeply effective whether you're looking to de-stress, move more freely, or support a long-term health condition.

You can practise qigong standing, sitting, or even lying down in bed. There’s no one right way — only what works for your body, in that moment.

A modern understanding of ancient wisdom

As I explore in my book Move Life Better, qigong works not just on muscles, but on fascia — the fluid, connective tissue that links everything in the body and communicates with every cell.

When you practise qigong, you’re not just stretching or strengthening. You’re hydrating tissues, unwinding tension, improving circulation, and even influencing how your genes express themselves. This is embodied movement — intelligent, healing, and deeply restorative. It’s movement as medicine.

“Movement is your natural medicine. Qigong helps your body remember what it already knows.”

Qigong helps you reconnect

It’s easy to feel disconnected — from our bodies, our breath, or the moment we’re in. Qigong invites you to return. To feel. To move with kindness and awareness.

You don’t have to be flexible or fit. You don’t need experience. You just need a willingness to start where you are, and meet yourself there.

For me, qigong is like a silent best friend — one that supports me, comforts me, and is with me whenever I need it. Always there. Always gentle. Always enough.

That’s the real power of qigong: it reminds you that the wisdom, strength and healing you’re looking for — are already within you.
